The plants have been carefully prepared to remove all foliage from the lower trunk to enhance the treelike appearance. Opening up the branches into layers also helps create the illusion of trees vs. bushes.

Some finishing touches on the trees. Trimming the branches with scissors to create an irregular outline.

Coarse aquarium sand is placed in the valley area to suggest a natural stream

An aerial view of the completed planting shows the plant arrangement. A good arrangement avoids having plants lined up in rows and has a natural arrangement of trunks and stones.

Kathy uses Armor-All as a pot cleaner. It does a good job of cleaning the pots and adding a lustre.

One of Kathy's students worked on a beech forest, replacing a dead tree.

The spray bottle is an important accessory to have for bonsai to prevent plant roots from drying out and settling moss.

A variety of Japanese Beech (Fagus crenata) create a convincing forest.

Trunk caliper (or thickness) should be consistent with the height of the tree to produce a pleasing effect. The buds of these beeches are already swelling and will be leafing out within a month.

Matt,

Thanks for posting this series of photos. I'm planning to make a boxwood forest next week and this is very educational.
Do you have a overview picture of the finished product ??
