Muck was made from clay and chopped moss. I used the muck around the stones and backfilled the root areas with straight akadama. After working the soil into the roots I kept the akadama moist to help compact the root areas.

I then began the tedious job of appyling the moss. I used as much moss as was necessary to cover the soil top and work in between the stones. It is the moss on this planting that will keep the soil from washing away. The tray was cleaned up and I photographed it. My wife was cleaning for Christmas parties, and I was only able to take a few photo's. My camera was on the wrong setting and I had to crop them pretty small to get them on the web. I hope to take some more photo's tomarrow.

This was a very fun planting to make. I had fun trying different locations for the trees, and trying out different locations of the overhangs on the branches. Definately not as easy as it looks!

Thanks, Bonsai-al

Excellent work, Al. My only complaint is you're suffering from bloated JPEG disease and posting postage stamps too. BrianBay9 had it too, but he got cured. Please tell us what photo editing program you're ab-using and we will cure you of this dreaded plague!

Regards,

Matt

Sorry, found the problem. It was in the photo editor...err photo keyboard/operator..

Bonsainut, very nice work. I like the prune job and will be doing that next month. I agree that branch on the right needs to be shortened mucho, or removed entirely. Thanks, Bonsai-al

Great work Mr. Al!
I agree on the right-hand branch, and I vote for entirely.

Your rock placement is very natural looking.
Musta spent hours staring at your rocks

I took this photo today. I brightened it up a little for better contrast.
I edited out the branch and virtualed the branch above the removed one that was drooping down. Is this the finished look I should have?

Let me know and I will cut it off..

PS.. a top view for those that want to see some white space. Hard to see that in a 2D photo. Thanks for the ideas.

yes, the branch definitely needs to go. However, I feel the composition loses balance without it. Maybe try to find a smaller tree that can be placed behind the disappearing branch as a "distant" tree to lend balance to the right side.
