This is a very interesting thread. Thank you, TreeBay. I have grown a number of American Persimmons from seed. Diospyros virginiana, I think (I've misplaced my field guide). I guess you are working with Diospyros kaki, if I'm not mistaken. I got some negative comments on another site about the American species, but I an persisting. We have alot of them in the woods here and they look like pretty good material to me. The seedlings are growing very rapidly and look much like what you are working with. I hope they progress as well as yours are.

Hi Fred,
The Princess Persimmon is Diospyros rhombifolia, native to China, (not Diospyros kaki - Japanese Persimmon) Japanese Persimmon has larger fruit and MUCH larger leaves. "Kaki" is the general word for persimmon in Japanese. Princess Persimmon is called Rouya-gaki. You can see more links here: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&...-8&q=Rouya-gaki This one has pictures of the fruit and leaves - almost actual size if you have a large monitor. http://natural-tree.com/homepage/it...yagaki-mesu.htm I also have had a couple of chocolate persimmons - http://www.davewilson.com/br40/br40Persimmons.html but I haven't had any fruit since cutting it back for bonsai training. Hey cool!
I have 1 male and 1 female princess persimmon I got this may @ Maruyama. They have quite a few and they are fruit-bearing size. The Wife there said the females can make fruit by themselves, but the fruit fall off before they turn red. So i was like...hmmm Ill take a male too my persimmons are still in 4 in. pots so Ill wait before i take any cuttings. Persimmons are so much fun ![]() Kazuki |

That wheelbarrow full of cuttings still weren't quite mature. The plants take about 5-7 years to come to fruiting from seed in my experience. The appearance of thorns on the Princess Persimmon is a sign that the plant is reaching maturity.
Persimmon fruit is borne on the current season's branch growth http://www.extento.hawaii.edu/kbase...ps/i_persim.htm However, I usually don't get fruit for a couple of years after heavy pruning on established trees, or from cuttings. Regards, Matt |
