How ya all goin?
Please let me introduce you to KUMA, this juniper squamata that a dear friend of mine purchased on my recommendation approximately one year ago. It was not too dissimilar to what you see on these before photos maybe more branches, which I took off to create a particular direction and possible other options. The tree soon started to prosper from this miner clean up, but unfortunately, in early December my good friend took his family to Sydney on a short vacation and left this beauty in full sun for four days to the mercy of 38 to 42C tempertures and ferocious north winds WITH NO WATER!!!
"Flaming idiot, why didn’t ya bring it to my place?" Needless to say, it suffered severe burning and dehydration. Hence, how it was named Kuma, for the strength, resistance and determination this bear of a juniper showed. The next three months were crucial to whether Kuma continued to show life, thank the tree lord it did!
We are in the beginning of March and the next few days are moderately fine, so I’ve decided to get Kuma back into vigour mode I will repot into the next size pot,choose a new front, set a new angle, prune reasonably heavy on top, lightly elsewhere and leave sacrifices to fatten and strenghthen the lower branches. Wiring and final styling and decisions must now wait till the tree regains its vigour. I’m hoping by the end of fall I’ll achieve this.
