Pruning & Progress Pics.

Gday folks!

Thought I'd take this opportunity to drop in and show some recent pics of my 'project' trees - that is, my pair of fat-bottomed Angophoras. Firstly, this is the one I began in October of 2004. (For the sake of identification, I'll need to assign names to them, given that their size and form are currently very similar. I think I'll call this one 'Cletus', in the spirit of Trailer-Trash Bonsai.) The 1st couple of pics are repeats, but I've placed them all in one post for ease of viewing.

Pic 1 shows Cletus as he was when I first adopted him. Note the very legggy growth and lack of foliage near the trunk.

Pic 2 shows Cletus about 10 weeks later, with lots of re-growth after a severe prune and repot.

Pic 3 shows him as he was about 16 weeks after the 1st pic. I have pruned hard again, back to the 1st set of leaves on each branch. The arrows indicate the places on the 1st branch (LH side) and trunk leader (RH side) where dormant buds lie in waiting. Also shown is the place where I intend to chop the trunk - I left that upper portion intact so that the tree would root more easily after repotting.

Any questions or comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

FlyBri.

PS: Gday Villia - looks like a decent start there, though it's kinda hard to tell given the small pic you posted. Keep an eye on those long internodes. Do you know what species this is?

And Here's Cletus Today...

3 weeks since the last pruning, and Cletus is growing like mad. Note the adventitious growth at the base of the trunk - this should be removed as it appears, as should any unwanted buds. At this point, I think I'll let him grow unhindered in order to thicken up the leader and 1st branch. I might perform the trunk chop soon, so as to free up some canopy space.

Peace.

FlyBri.

Seedling Angophora

Thank you very much FlyBri for all of your posts to date and the attached photos.

I am just getting into Bonsai so I really don't have anything to show, I took a couple of photos of Angophoras (i think) up at smiths lake and at Elvina Bay, Sydney recently.
I would like to approximate trees in there natural form, rather than follow tradition too closely.

I hope these images aren't too big.

Gday Jeb!

I'm using Photoshop Elements 2.0, and all I do is reduce the image size to 800x600, then Save For Web where I play with the Quality until I get the filesize down to about 72 kb. Sounds like you may already be trying this, but I hope it helps.

Good luck.

FlyBri.

The species is angohona costata....I think that is the spelling....with the internodes maybe it needs more sun, I shall try different position...

Cheers

Gday Villia!

That would be Angophora costata - the same species as Cletus above. I'd be wary of giving yours too much sun as the pot appears quite small. All my trees are in full sun year round, but none of them are in tiny Bonsai pots. Where are you, and what sort of climate do you experience?

Fly.

Thanks for this very informative thread Flybri, I've heard that the aussie natives are tempermental and don't like being interfered with but from my own experiences of digging them up they seem to do just fine, the ones I dug up were not really good bonsai material but good to practice digging techinques on, I've successfully dug banksia and gum species, now to find ones thats really decent.

I'm in Melbourne....just starting to put on a ton of new growth so might leave where it is for the moment on second thoughts....gets filtered mid morning sun up to about 1pm...but the tree seems to like it.....I've got several others as well some in full sun, eg..mahogany gum, peppermint gum....and they are doing extremely well also...

Hi, thanks so much for posting this info on eucalyptus bonsai, I've just brought an unknown species of eucalyptus from a greengrocer for a pound with the intention to bonsai. I'm pretty new to all this, so very sorry for basic question asking. The plant seems tiny to the stock plants shown on this site, it's about 40cm tall, and the main stem is only 4mm in diameter. Should I repot it in a normal pot, or in a bonsai pot? It's pretty root bound.
