"Feel it do not try to analyse it. We in the west do not feel, there are no rules just (guide lines) if it feels right it is right.
That is why we are still trying to find the ideal. The Holy Grail does it exist?. Do it because you like it, simplicity is after all what the eastern culture is about." Do you really believe this? Sorry, but Eastern culture is anything but simple if you delve beneath its surface. It is extremely complex, with appearances being very important and relationships so byzantine it can boggle the mind. Having worked for a Japanese company, I found that for Westerners, Eastern culture is full of contradictions and isn't really what it appears to be. I suspected the Japanese felt the same way about us. In Japanese culture, single (simple) things become symbols for greater things and take on more resonance. That makes it easy to miss alot. In a way, simplicity is extremely complicated in Japan. As for the West not "feeling" things, gee what was that Renaissance thing all about ? Simplicity has always held a special place in Western culture, from Ancient Sparta (Spartan--get it? ) to ancient monastic orders, to the romantic ideal of the quiet warrior (see a Clint Eastwood spaghetti Western) the West has always understood the "less is more" approach.Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now. It's just that simplistic comparisons of East and West, with the West usually held inferior, always get my back up... |
