There are no 2 needled white pines...white pines usually have 5 needles per bundle. Ponderosas and pinyons will sometimes have 2 needles per bundle, but usually 3, and ponderosas in particular wouldn't be confused with a white pine of any sort. If you're trying to sell/trade this tree, you really should know what species it is.

Speaking from personal experience this tree looks an awful lot like a nursery cultivated Mugo Pine. The big give-away is the way the roots tangle around the trunk. This kind of element is generally caused by a tree becoming root bound within the confines of a container before being potted up. Yamidori trees generally do not have this feature. The way the trunk has been bent is not a natural feature of a Yamidori either, and is a poor example of a master's work, it is too two dimensional but it is most likely the work of man. If this tree is 140 years old I am 22,--- neither are true.

I would guess the tree to be maybe between thirty and sixtyish, but here again age is not a determining factor unless you are trying to sell it to someone who thinks age is everything. Of course I could be way off the wall, the tree may be every-thing it is claimed to be. However; if I were in the market for a tree like this the above reflects my thinking and would be the basis of my personal decision to not buy the tree, or trade anything of real value for it.

As an amendment to my above critique and in the interest of fairness, I would like to see a close ups of the buds and growth. I would like to know the species and where it was collected. If the current owner does not know he could find out from the original seller. Most of this information exonerates or condemns the tree as a fraud. Anyone looking to spend this kind of money for a tree deserves to know these things, any one looking to trade a good tree for this tree deserves to know these things.

Those are actually one of the FEATURES of the tree.

Chef - Did you get this from Dave DeWire? How long have you had it? Do you have any more info from Dave on where he acquired this tree? Contact Dave and get specifics such as exact species and how long it was in his possession. Perhaps he has some older photos showing it's development.

A little more info would help you. Posting it here means you are not trying to sell to novices on eBay. BonsaiTalk members with the funds to purchase this tree are going to need more information or they will simply ignore it.

Help yourself and provide some more info and perhaps you may find a willing buyer.

Thanks Chef.

Can you work on not using CAPS LOCK all the time? It's easier to read that way.

Thanks for clarifying it's a lodgepole pine.

You don't need to "spill the beans" with Dave. Just ask him for some more info, or if you are uncomfortable approaching him and it sells at least the buyer could ask for more info. Dave is good people - at least he has been with me so I can vouch for Dave. He gave me all the info I needed on a few trees I purchased over the years. I thought I recognized his handiwork on your tree.
