........but can certainly verify that tropical species do “fart” on occasion...I first observed this phenomenon when I erected my first greenhouse, and assume it was the result of the closed environment trapping the hydrogen sulfide gas allowing me to “smell” the odor...

... I have, however, noticed the type of fertilizer I use does create a difference in my ‘ofactory observations’...When I was using organic fertilizer the odor produced by the tropical trees in the greenhouse was more of the nature of the ‘flatulence of a cow’ [bovine fart], but now that I am using only non-organic fertilizers the odor is more like the ‘eructation of the cow’ [bovine belch]...

I do realize this information is not sufficient to say without any doubt that trees in fact do “fart”, however, I believe it possibly warrants further study, rather than just saying “No, trees do not fart”...There is also the possibility, as Mr. Wes has pointed out, that the roots of the bonsai tree is the source of “tree farts”...I think we have all experienced the effect, and witnessed those ‘tale-tale’ bubbles caused by the relaxing qualities of a warm bath...

Behr

Clearly this cannot go unchallenged, in a respectful manner, of course.

As for my experience, I'll have you know that I now have 7 AND A HALF years of bonsai experience! Some of those years with living trees! And if you include the years I have participated in the subject at hand, then I am clearly qualified to comment.

With regard to tropical trees: I have only recently begun working with tropicals to a large degree, and then only in the open air. So I will allow that I have no first hand knowledge with tropical bonsai to refute your observations.

Your observation with organic vs inorganic fertilizers is anticdotal at best. Are you sure you didn't trap "cow generated" methane in the organic fertiziler? Perhaps the real utility of the use of Superthrive in conjunction with fertilizers is to overcome this possibility?

While we may disagree on many aspects of the discussion, we can certainly agree that the subject deserves more intensive study. Perhaps we can collaborate on a grant applicaiton to the USDA? Department of Engergy?

Bacteria that live in cows are not plants.. they are unicellular organisms of the Kingdom Monera that does not photosynthesize. The only thing close to bacteria that is a "plant" would be the cyanobacteria blue green algae and it releases oxygen.

Ok, so next time a kid asks me if plants fart I will fire my answers in such a way he/she there not ask ever again; this is some of the stuff I will tell him/her:

1. Farts coming from plants are not a topic for discussion because they cause the demise of serious online forums.
2. Plants do not have a sphincter so if they farted you wouldn't be able to hear them.
3. Plants exhale methane and might cause most of the greenhouse gasses.
4. The previous point is part of a conspiracy against green forests.
5. Tropical trees are more likely to fart than colder climate trees.
6. If your father told your mother that it was the plant that farted, then he is lying, go and ask HIM the question.
7. We are not responsible for our farts, the bacteria that live and thrive in our intestines are.
8. Carnivorous plants are thought to fart, but those studying this phenomena were lost and never found; nobody knows if the carnivorous plants ate them, because nobody has either seen a plant eating a human, and if they did their farts would be unbearable.

Thanks for your replies/thoughts.

Ever hear of the burning bush in biblical legend? there is a bush in the middle east that releases methane or something similar. This is intended to ignite, say during a dry lightning storm, so that the resulting fire destroys all the other plants around. The bushes seed pods (fireproof) then open, and the seedlings can grow without competition. But plants dont have a digestive system (hence their need for photosynthesis to make sugars) so they dont actually cut the cheese, par se.
