Do plants fart?

I get asked by a kid the following question:

"Do plants fart?"

I couldn't honestly answer this question and rambled for a bit before saying no.

Well, they do expel oxygen, they are just more discrete than human in the way they exude their gases.

If by "fart" you mean release methane, then no, higher plants do not until they are decomposing in a compost heap. Bacteria, on the other hand, can fart.....bacteria in cow (or other mamamal's) stomachs, and bacteria in salt marshes both release methane.

Hmmm,

Well maybe here is some evidence to back this up ORey. Many times when I will water my shohins I will see a few small bubbles come up in the tub. I think the nice warmish water relaxes them some.
