they would be those right at the tip of the branch, thats why they're needle not deciduose leaves. needles can last many years, allowing a branch to form behind it, leaves fall away each year.

The original needles of the bud (that began on the trunk, before it could be called a branch) will be older than the branch (i.e. the 'wood'), correct? Though the rest of the needles, having budded out later, will of course be younger, the original ones should be oldest. A long shot, yes, but good for a riddle.

Yes, that's why I used the word 'needles' and not 'leaves' so as not to confuse with a deciduous tree, in which case, the riddle would fail.
