Post [Growing Lifestyle] Hawaiian Umbrella Tree - Small (Arboricola Schefflera)

This is the tree that we recommend if you are inexperienced with bonsai or you do not have a green thumb. In our opinion it is one of the easiest bonsai trees to care for and is a very beautiful "trouble-free" evergreen. If you don't know which tree ...

I have a yard full of these. Everytime I trim one of mine back I don't have the heart to throw away the chopped-off piece so stick it in a mixture of perlite and vermiculite and, voila, a new rooted cutting. Which then goes in a pot and the cycle starts all over. I currently have 10 growing in lava rocks, about 10 in fairly nice bonsai pots, about 30 in small brown ceramic or plastic bonsai pots, and a handful more in rooting pots. I find them great to give as gifts, as house-warming presents, as new-job or promotion presents, or just as "guests at a party" (here in Hawaii we always take something when invited to somebody's house for "whatever") gift. Mine are mostly in filtered sun most of the day and get watered once a day with my "real" bonsai plants. I also find that the rock plantings, in particular, do very well in an office environment (even with A/C) as long as there is bright fluorescent lighting. One of the bonsai clubs that I belong to puts on a big show once a year and we have two tables of educational materials. We have 9 of these plants in various stages to show the progression from cutting to beautiful plant in a bonsai pot.
