WTB: Small Grey lava rock

I've been tying to find a nice grey or dark grey rock, preferably lava rock to my soil mix. Does anyone know where I can find/buy some? I have a bag of Red Colorado Lava Rock (Bonsaimonk) which has a few grey pieces in it but I want more for my top dressing.

Hi Trex,

I know that Dallas Bonsai has many different types of sands and stone for top dressing. Try checking these links out.

Top Dressings

River Sands

All the best,

Aaron

Yup that Oiso River sand isn't cheap that's for sure. Perhaps checking out DIY stores/Garden centres like Lowes or Home Depot, even builders merchants or landscaping firms might carry sands of varying colours and sizes. There may be an equally nice local stone or sand that is quarried which would suit your requirements.

All the best,

Aaron

Isn't pumice usually dark grey? Have you tried that?

Good luck!

I thought Pumice was white. And I guess im looking for some place on line because Home depot, Lowes, etc. don't have anything small enough. Isn't there anyone on here who buys small grey rocks in bulk (big bag) from somewhere, I can't be the only one ever to look for this. Thanks for your suggestions.

I bought grey pumice from some nursery. It was in a small bag, you know, about 5 lbs. It's like a cactus mix or something. Try nurseries that sell cactus....

Good luck!

I get my dark gray lava rock from El Dorado Bonsai. Here's a link to their website where you can get their contact information. Give Dolly a call and she should be able to help you. Good luck, Paul
