LOL

I twigged to what you had implied on the way to school last night so asked Ray and Clinton then.
Yes they have it in 2 sizes, 0-2mm, and 2-5mm

I will go on the weekend and get some

I have obtained some maidenwell from Enfield produce, both 0-2mm, and 5-7mm, and have some in a pot to see how long it stays wet, but it has rained a few times since then.

Will let everyone know what i find

Ken

Hey KC I guess the maidenwell you speak of is diatomite?

Is it possible to post a picture of it or describe it's caracteristics.
Another great test is a dry wieght and wet wieght to see how much water it absorbes.

Yes Soltan it is Diatomite
Mined in Queensland and their website shows some pictures on the products
http://www.maidenwelldiatomiteaustralia.com/

I will do a test as you suggest on the weekend.

I have a small pot with some in it on the deck and I watered it this morning before work 7am, and it was still damp this evening at 6 pm when I got home so it looks pretty good moisture holding properties.

Forgot to tell you what it looked like :-)

looks like soft thin rocks. Quite firm to toch but brittle. You can try to squeeze it and it will not budge but can breakit up easily. Colour is Grey and light brown.

Hi Soltan

Did the weight test for you

I filled a 200mm pot with 5-7mm size Maidenwell. Dry it weighed 1.2kg ( excluding the pot). After Watering weel till it ran clear and all the dust had been removed I waited till it stoppe running and then weighed again.

finished weight was 2.4Kg
so it absorbed its own weight in water.

Looks like just gravel. Is there any organics in it at all.
Looks as if it would barely slow the water down. Do a soak test to see if it breaks down after soaking.

Hi Ken,

Looks fairly good to me, particle size might be a tiny bit to large for our warm summers (not this year though). Although the water retention seems to balance that our a bit. Please do what Repotter suggested.....soak it in warm water in a take away container and shake it every day for a week. Replace warm water daily and see what remains after a week. If its goop, i wouldn't use it, if theres clay-like residue, i wouldn't use it, if theres just some small amount of fines, i would use it (sifted).

Repotter, this product is not gravel. According to the internet site that sold Ken this stuff, its actually diatomite, a substance made from non crystalline
silica........gravel is usually a crystalline form, such as quartz. I found this information from the site Ken gave us http://www.maidenwelldiatomiteaustr...nfo/default.htm
under the heading "chemical report"
