Would anyone recommend this soil?!?!?!?!?!

Hi guys

i hope this isnt a re-post.

anyhow, i need to re-pot one of my trees.
and obviously its the first time in doing so.

i bought a POtting mix..this is what it is..

Brand: AMGROW
Product: Bonsai Potting Mix, Black Label - Superior Quality.

it says its an organic matter...
said to be "freely draining mix but still obtains good moisture"

it also has Nutrismart (fertilizer), Nutrigrow (another type of fertilizer) Bioactive COmpost (reducing root disease)

what do you recon people?

i know its not the traditional Japanese soil etc etc...

but it sounds convincing and i bought it at a nursery. and it was the only one they had

thanks in advance guys

This type of soil can be okay. It depends alot on what you are growing and where.
I found the most important thing with soil is not whats in it but that it should be sifted. Even the pre packaged bonsai soil. I found that if I sifted this type of pre packaged bonsai siol I would be lucky to get half that was usable. There is usually way too much fines in them.
If this is all you can find at the moment I say use it but you can do much better by finding good size ingredients 2-4 mm in general. Best thing you can do is invest in a sieve. Also ensure that your bonsai pot has plenty of drainage with this pre-packaged bonsai soil. Drill a few extra holes in it if you are using a cheap pot.

Oh and since you are in Australia in case you don't realise summer is not a good time to repot most species unless you are brave or really know what you are doing.

LOL eeiko, Ficus are strang birds... they're tropical, not temperate, so they dont exactly fall into the same catagory as most other bonsai.

Yes Ficus is one of the species I have been told should ber repotted in summer.
I have read that they can be repotted all year round but I am unsure. I have one that needs reotting at the moment so I hope we get some more advice on this.

Even if the fig is due for rfepotting don't panic. I feel it is often safer to have a root bound tree than a badly repotted tree. A root bound tree takes some extra care in watering and placment but will not kill a tree quickly. Bad repotting can!

G'day Eeiko...

"...it says its an organic matter...said to be "freely draining mix but still obtains good moisture"...".

Personally...I'm a believer in the KISS Principle...I use a pure inorganic bonsia soil mix...and very rarely add a little (less than 5 Orchid Mix (fir bark).

That's what works for me...

Pat

well whats been said is that ORGANIC soil can break down and become more finer...
hence restricting flow, air etc.

but koreshoff said that they all use Organic soil...and something about the organic soil that has something that inorganic can never have or do...
( i always fall asleep when the old guy talks to me)

ummm
well the koreshoff guy said that the organic should be well & truely ok, since they recommend it.... but he said that i should & must add like 40% Gritt into the soil to make it more chunky and more draining free etc etc...

would this be right?

who else uses organic here??
