Winter Fertilization

Well I don't know about you all, but winter has hit, well close enough, we have almost freezing weather all night, everynight. Anyway, to my questions. I know in the winter we are supposed to let the plants get less... much less fertilizer (except ones without leaves, correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, since I don't have money to go a buy more, I already have some all purpose fertilizer. My question since it is organic and in little itty bitty granuals is, if I let it sit in some watering can water, will the water becopme a diluted fertilizer itself? I feel like its a stupid question, because I think it would, however I want to check with the masta's and pro's yo's (sorry bought that last part, go a little carried away). Anyway, thanks.

Hi, like many things in Bonsai... it depends. First, where you are is important, I see you are in Zone 8.

If your trees are in dormancy, they require very little to no fertilizer. I live in Zone 5b/6a and do not fertilize my trees from the end of October till they are out of dormancy!

As for your mixing the fertilizer with water, you would need to find out the info from the manufacturer. It is possible to do, but you will have no idea as to the strength or percentages of NPK in the water. What would a weak solution mean? But again it is probably not needed!

So in short...my thought is Water ...sure when needed. Fertilizer in dormancy .... not needed!

I agree with Jay. If your trees are dormant, any fertilizer addition would probably be wasted. Wait until next spring.

I still cut back. I'll fertilize once a month with Schultz's at 1/2 strength. If my trees start to look deficient, then I'll fertilize more often.
