When to start fertilizing?

As my first post, I would like to say tanks to every one in the forum. This resource has been invaluable to me and I have already learned tons just by following some of the threads.

Anyway, I was wondering when would be a good time to start a regular fertilizing routine for a freshly potted tree. Should I wait for a couple of weeks before I start, or can I start right away?

Thanks, Hoser

Re: When to start fertilizing?

You can start with some bone meal right away. It's very good for developing roots. Organic fertilizer could be applied almost straight away because it takes a couple of weeks to kick in. I would hold off on inorganic or chemical fertilizers for 2 weeks to one month after repotting, depending on how quickly the tree seems to recover.

Some folks let the first flush of growth in spring push out and harden off before fertilizing. It really depends on what stage your tree is at, and whether you want lots of growth (=more coarse) or more controlled growth.

Regards,

Matt
