I use...all trees...
Equal parts of (Profile or Turface or OilDri), and Pumice...and, on rare occasions, a dab of Orchid Mix (bark). Been working for me for several years... Pat

Maple growing beds
15% Sheep poopoo 15% Chicken poopoo 20% Mushroom Compost 30% small scoria 20% crushed granite/screenings - very small You will need to lower the pH once all mixed as the mushroom compost has a high pH. Grows on plants like a dream !! Last edited by FlyBri : 22-Mar-2007 at 07:01 AM. Reason: You could have said: 'poo', 'poop', 'manure', 'dung', 'droppings', 'faeces', or even 'scat' at a stretch. 'Sh!t' isn't really acceptable in a G rated timeslot. |

Soil Mix
My standard soil mix is:
1/3 Grani Grit (Growers) 1/3 Turface MVP 1/3 Pine Bark Will add a bit more grit and perhaps perlite for the conifers. Nice thing, I can get them all from Agway. One trip and I am done. Ron |

mame:
1/2 "Japanese shohin soil"* 1/2 Aussie Gold fine** shohin: 100% "Japanese shohin soil" larger trees, deciduous: 1/3 Akadama unsifted 1/3 scoria (black or dark red brown lava rock) sifted 1/3 perlite or pumice, sifted *bought a bag of this and love it! It seems to be very uniform particles of equal parts akadama and Japanese red pumice. Needs no sifting, use it right out of the bag. Particles slightly larger than kitty litter. **this is used for planting orchids, and is coir fiber, diatomite, charcoal, and perlite. The fine size has very little perlite. No peat, but acts like peat to keep the roots of mame happy. I prefer to use Akadama for good trees, having found a lot of difference in the way the maples and azaleas survive the dry summers in akadama. It retains enough moisture to keep them happy, and the roots can grow right through the individual particles. The scoria and perlite make a scaffolding of sorts that keeps the akadama from compacting. Joanie |

Quote:
It's a uniform mixture of, apparently, akadama and Japanese pumice. A little bigger particles than cat litter, already sifted. It was about $10 or $15 for the bag, which does a lot of shohin and mame. That's all I know. No English on the label. Actually, looking at the bag, it may be Chinese. The only English spelling is "Young Poong", the manufacturer.Edit: a google search of Young Poong seems to imply that it may be Korean. Joanie Last edited by Joanie : 7-Apr-2007 at 07:35 PM. |
