I've used this, both pre-made and the mix:

http://www.meangreenfertilizer.com/

But lately I just buy a box of granular/powdered organic fertilizer (something like 4-4-4 to 7-7-7 with trace nutrients), dump into a bucket, add a couple of cups of flour (to help hold it together), add water and mix until you get a thick, sticky mess. I then let it sit overnight, scoop out with a cookie or butter scoop (like a mini ice cream scoop). As long as it is going to be a dry day, I just plop it directly on the soil in the morning.

I have used the biogold and it worked well but was expensive. i have found that meangreen is more economical, but you have to mix it your self.I had placed a order for the ready made cakes and liked the results. so i purchased a 2.5 pound bag of the summer mix and mixed it myself. its not hard. I recommend using a small size ice cream scoop, it will dry alot faster this way.

I just ordered 2 five pound bags of the stuff, they are offering free shipping for the month of march. good deal. You have to call because they have not updated the free shipping on the website. karen is a nice person to deal with.

www.Meangreenfertilizer.com

www.dallasbonsai.com sells the biogold and rapeseed

www.hollowcreekbonsai.com also sells cakes

i have purchased some cakes from ebay also, but i think meangreen is going to be my main source from now on.

I've never used them, they stink, can clog up the soil, are messy and they attract insects.

Organophosphates are they way to go. They also provide trace minerals.

Just ask any professional nursery-man they will tell you!

I use, Osmocote 17-17-17 when it’s the rainy season.

During the rest of the growing season, I use Peters 20-20-20 & Miracle Grow, switching to prevent a chemical lock.

For blooming & fruiting I use Super Bloom & Miracid on Acid lovers.

Happy growing, redhawk

I use biogold. As Markovgv says, it's a bit expensive, but very good. I only have around 50 trees, so a large bag (£36) lasts about three years, which works out at about 60p a month, so it's not that expensive really.

I make my own fertilizer cakes out of this material:

5 bags of cottonseed meal
2 bags of blood meal
1 bag of bone meal
and a five gallon bucket with lid.

Mix it thoroughly together. Add water with about a capful of superthrive in it. Mix in the water a bit at a time, until it's like playdough consistency.

This makes A LOT of fertilizer, but you can adjust the proportions necessary to fit your needs. I'm thinking of selling these on ebay, they're just really useful.

*Warning-don't let your cats or dog around these, and when you put them in the pot, keep them away.
*If you allow these to stay in a bag for a long period of time moistened, they will grow mold. Just keep the bag open if you are not going to use them for a period of time, and they will harden, but have the same nutritional value.

Hmm… more problems with the fertilizer Cakes.

With Organophosphates you won’t have these problems.

They’re self contained, premixed and ready to use.

I really don't think you mean "Organophosphates", which is a group that contains nerve gas, neurotoxins and many pesticides.

Dude, its been awhile since my (in)organic chemistry class. So, I had to research more. Read on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phosphate

"A phosphate, in inorganic chemistry, is a salt of phosphoric acid. In organic chemistry, a phosphate, or organophosphate, is an ester of phosphoric acid. Phosphates are important in biochemistry and biogeochemistry."

The chemical compounds for organic ferts are (N)nitrogen, (P2O2)phosphate, (K2O)potash some have trace minerals too.
