Watering kanuma or akadama
As some may recall from an earlier thread, I recently put a half-dozen collected azaleas and rhodys into bigs pots of pure large-grain-size kanuma. It's cool stuff, quite unlike any soil I've ever used before. It's really cool, because it drains super-fast (basically I can turn a hose on it full blast and never have the water back up) and yet hold considerable moisture as well.
And so I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how best to water. After watering, the soil takes on a darker maize color, compared to the chalky yellow color that it has when it is dry. After a day or two, the soil around the tree base starts to dry out enough that the chalky yellow returns near the tree base (though the soil remails darker yellow around the edges of the pot.) Is this the right time to water again? Or should I wait until the whole surface turns the chalky yellow of the dry soil? Should I wait even longer? Or should I water every day, dry or not, period, because with drainage like that there is little worry about root rot? Thanks in advance, Old Mister

Re: Watering kanuma or akadama
Old Mister Crow,
When watering kanuma I wait till the kanuma is half dry then water. Kanuma and akadama are so free draing I don't think you would have to worry about any problems. If you don't want to water when its half dry wait another day then water. You should be fine either way. ![]() Your Friend, Adam |

Re: Watering kanuma or akadama
Adam,
I thought you just dropped your tree into kanuma a week or two back! So is your recommendation based on the fact that your azalea survived that period of time, or on some other source (e.g. the good Mr. Uchida)? Please help us understand [i:66ab896e56]why[/i:66ab896e56] you're making the recommendation. Thanks, Old Mister

Re: Watering kanuma or akadama
Old Mister Crow, I would not give information that I myself had not had experianced. The information did come from Mr. Uchida the day I purchased the azalea and kanuma. This is what he told to do when I needed to water.

Re: Watering kanuma or akadama
Great - If that method is good enough for Mr. Uchida, it's good enough for me!
Thanks for clarifying. It's very useful to know where the suggestions come from, I find - in part because suggestions are sometimes grounded in a particular climate, and sometimes not, and it's key to figure out when climate is a factor. For example, watering protocol in Atlanta was [i:cc80e1f5b7]completely[/i:cc80e1f5b7] different from the protocol here. It's also fun to see when the various experts agree and disagree on technique. All the best, Old Mister
