An easy rule of thumb is to water only when the tree needs it. If you scratch down about an inch into the soil and it is dry (or mostly dry) then it is time to water. A real popular method is to simply stick a wooden chop stick into the soil. Then all you have to do is remove it and look to see if the wood is moist. If not time to water. I usually water by weight. I know what my tree with pot weighs when wet and dry and by picking the pot up I can tell if it needs water.
I'm sure someone else will chime in with different advice or corrections to mine. I am still a beginner. Hope this helps Adam |

Watering is one of the hardest skills to master. I am still working on it. Some species are more tolerant of over or underwater. Watering too soon stresses trees out too, because it can lead to root rot and reduce the concentration of oxygen in the soil. Summertime in my climate, for me, doesn't take much thought: ater everything in sight, every day. As we head into late fall, it's like Mittar says, you check the trees, individually is ideal, but if you have a large collection you can find some "indicator" trees that will help you judge when the others might need water.
My crepe myrtle is a great indicator because the leaves wilt a bit when it is really ready. Akadama soil is expensive, but if you have just a bit mixed in with the topmost soil it will give you a color change as it dries out. Before long, after watering and observing your trees, you become sensitive to humidity, wind and temperature yourself, and you become almost a walking barometric bonsai machine, integrating all that input. In the meantime, there is some info in the ***FAQ*** on watering, here: http://www.memobug.com/csf/csFAQ.cg...e=Watering%2edb You might also try bonsaiTALK Links under techniques -> watering which at the moment takes you here: http://www.memobug.com/treebay/link...iques/Watering/ Happy watering! Matt
