Superthrive?

I have heard many raves about Superthrive. I purchased a 4 oz. bottle this past weekend and mixed in 1/4 teaspoon of the magic juice in a 1 gal. bottle with my normal diluted MG. I went around watering all of my houseplants and tropical bonsai as well as my outside trees. Problem being my Fukien tea within a matter of 2 days had ALL it's leaves turn brown and shrivel up. Has anyone else ever had this happen? It is not that I do not have faith in the product as much as my concern for certain plants being sensitive to it.

By the way, I did not get the leaves wet with the solution.

Sorry, don't know about fukien tea. Maybe you used too much Generally, I only use half or quarter strength for MiracleGro or other soluble additives. Superthrive I use only a couple of drops in a two gallon can. That magic potion is powerful stuff.

Hope your tree recovers. Good luck.

Travesty, I don't know what the MG is that you refered to, but I have probably 30 Fukien Tea plants and use Super Thrive all the time on them. I can't believe it was that. If Super Thrive was harmful in any way, it would not be as popular as it is. I use it on everything I have....... It has never caused a problem yet.
I hope you find out what did cause the problem.
Best wishes.

I have not had any problems when I use it. I only use it when I repot or do some branch cutting.

The MG stands for Miracle Grow susieq. From what you people are telling me, it was probably a fluke thing that this happened.I thought maybe fukien's may be ultra sensative too it.Thanks for all the input people.I hope my tree comes back.It was on its way to being a nice mame.I do not want to blame the Superthrive. It was just too soon after using it.Thanks again people.

Highly doubtful it's the Superthrive. There is no evidence that trees can even take up vitamins or hormones in solution, at least according to some horticulturalists over on the Internet Bonsai Site. I would tend to agree, since I used to overdose plants on Superthrive repeatedly and continuously when I was first learning bonsai. It had no ill effects on any of those trees from what I could tell. It had no beneficial effects, from what i could tell either, but that's another story :-)

More likely another problem with the plant.

Travesty, I am at a loss for all the comments on the Forum, about Fukien Tea being sensitive or fussy..... I realize that the part of the country/world one lives in, has a great deal to do with how hard they are to grow, but sensitive or fussy is not how I find them. They sit out in the full sun, on a bench, and except for water, fertilizer, (osmacote, milorganite, or Peters liquid soluable.....half strength on the ones in bonsai pots) and the occasional trimming or pest control (with the same pesticides I use on the junipers) they get ignored. There are dozens of seedlings sprouting in the pots off the parent plants and I can't even begin to pot them all, I wouldn't have room. I will have to pull and toss most of them. Root and heavy branch pruning (during full summer season) doesn't even slow them down....... I won't go as far as saying they grow like weeds, but darn near it.

Being in Florida, they only need protection from the cold for a few weeks. They get put on little flat bed garden wagons and stay there all winter. If there is a frost or freeze warning, they go into the shop....an unheated closed in space. If the temperatures are above 40 degrees F. they stay out. They might not be "happy" about it, but it doesn't really hurt them. I have had Fukien Tea for about 10 years now. I do think that it is possible to "fuss too much" over them. That is true of many plants. The phrase "trying too hard" comes to mind. Having said all of this, I realize that things are not that simple for you in Chicago..... I hope you can work things out and enjoy them. There are trees that people up North can keep, that just won't tolerate living in Florida. Keeping tropicals up North probably amounts to the same thing as trying to keep a nice Japanese maple down here.

I never had any problems using Superthrive, but I only use it when repotting. I use 5 - 10 drops / gallons of water though and never mix it with other products.

Yes susieq, keeping tropicals in the Chicago area is a little tough. Just getting them through the long winters is tough enough. We only get about 3 months of weather that permit our tropicals outside, to gain enough strength to make it through until the following year without an appropriate .I envy the fact you can grow such hardy fukien tea's.
