Substitute for pine bark

Just wondering if you all had some alternatives to pine bark? I am having a hell of a time finding any that i dont have to break apart by hand! I bought a bag of orchid mix awhile back and i have been sorting through the charcoal/rock/bark mix and breaking the pieces up, but that takes forever.

Composted pine bark mulch is sold by the 25 lb bag at Home Depot as "Soil Conditioner" Brand names and mixtures can vary from place to place, but I've found "Nature's Pride Soil Conditioner" at Home Depot for years. It's kept outside in bagged piles with the mulch...

G'day Jason...

The Orchid Bark that I have referred to is NOTHING BUT BARK...not a mix of bark and other, other, other...stuff (couldn't think of a good name more it).

See if you can find an orchid shop or an Orchid Club...find out what they use. I know that it is available in graded sizes.

Also, the bark doesn't have to be pine...and I don't use composted bark.

Another posibillity is reptile bedding...I think it might be Cedar bark. If you can find a reptile shop, that might be the best source.

If no reptile shop, look for a pet shop that handles reptiles.

Now, to repeat myself...for bonsai in general...

The best thing for you to do is to find some one local...as in a PERSON or a CLUB...that you trust. Some one you can work with, face-to-face and hands-on.

There is so much more, however...Locals...Face-to-Face...Hands-on...

Pat
