Sub for Akadama
Does anyone use an alternative to akadama sold as a super absorbent containing freshwater diatomaceous earth (cat litter ingrediant). Its sold in the US by the napa Auto Parts stores. I've seen it listed in the "Bonsai 4 me" and is highly recommended. Any help on how to use it? should it be mixed or used "pure"?

I would not recommend the stuff you'll find at the autoparts store. I used it last year and it broke down in a matter of months. Turface is a much better material.

I've used "Axis", a DE product sold as a soil amendment:
http://www.axisplayball.com/AXIS.htm Seems to work fine, but it is very lightweight, about the density of perlite. It isn't quite as white as perlite (especially when wet), so it is a little more attractive. |

The other day I needed some soil quick and tried the Schultz Aquatic Soil
available at the home centers. It looks and acts exactly like calcined clay, at a reasonable price. |
