soil wetting agents
I've been advised to use a soil wetting agent (wettasoil, for those in australia) to ensue that the root ball doesn't dry out this summer. (this is not a water retaining agent) but I'm uncertain as to its effect on the root growth of my trees. the buld of my trees are in colanders so water penetration can be a problem. (I use a free draining mix.) But once it getts too dry, not something that happens often, but sometimes, it can be hard to rewet the root ball.

My current soil mix tends to be drying out quickly and seems very resistant to absorbing moisture again and it is only just into spring here. I cannot repot all my trees again so ar somewhat stuck with it. I had some "Ezi-Wet", Granulated Wetting agent which I am trying out and seems to fix the problem so I will see how I go with it over this summer. I have seen no problems as yet so here's hoping If the soil wil not rewet easily, then the best way is to submerge it and soak. My problem was that I would have to soak all my trees ever second day already Ken

Keeping plants wet in open mixes and collanders
buy a liquid soil wetter and dunk all your trees in a trough of the water with soil wetter until soaked to the root ball and then wrap the collanders in hession during the really warm months to prevent excessive dry out of the soil.

The wetting agents (not that gel stuff that absorbs the water) use surfactants (mild detergants) to help water penetrate the surface of soils. These products are designed for the small grains of garden soil but can be used for bonsai. I use a product that is basically small porous rocks that have been soaked in wetting agent then dried. The brand i use also has seaweed extract which my bonsai like. I sift the rocks and add it to my soil mix.
