Soil Seives Question Please

When acquiring these, would three sizes be adequate or would more be required?

3, 5 & 7mm (1/8, 13/64 & 9/32")

or, what would you recommend?

thanks, lm

It really depends on what you're sifting. Usually, I only need to sift out fines from material that has already been roughly graded. So I would typically only need a single sieve.

If you have soil components that are larger than what you want in your bonsai soil, you need a second size to screen that out, and if you are into shohin or making a top dressing you might have need for a very fine sieve.

As far as layering soil within a pot, that's something I have never done, but several of the texts, particularly the older ones, recommend it.

Regards,

Matt

Do you think it could be possible to make some sieves out of flywire mesh? Maybe some old stuff that you take off a window. Not sure what you might be able to use to make the frame to hold the mesh, maybe two pieces of tight thin interlocking pieces of metal.

Sure you can do this. The weave is a little coarser than ideal, but it works great for all but possibly your shohin soils and top dressings.

If you go this route, be sure to use the aluminum mesh and not the nylon kind. The nylon window screen is very weak and tends to rip. If you have the aluminum kind you can wrap a wooden box frame and then just staple gun it in place. If you go larger than 12x12 you'll probably need support - then you can use a wireframe over-the-door of the type they hang pots and pans from. I'll see if I can find a picture later.

Regards,

Matt
