Soil Mixture
I was talking to a guy who told me he grows most of his trees in a mixture of playsand, clay, and moisture control potting soil. Are there going to be any negative results from using the potting soil? Also, would lava rock be an acceptable subsitute for the clay? Also, I can't find turface anywhere that I've looked, is it the same as turf builder? Thanks for the help.

Johnsai,
soil mixes have become a personal thing these days.. your growin conditions will dictate your mix.. Brent Walston @ http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/soils.htm has a good write up on the subject.. I stay away from play sand completely.. to fine . holds to much water and not enough air space between particles. With bonsai soil mix I tell people to think hydroponics, soiless with fast drainage. Not familiar with turf builder.. if it is 1/8" or larger and high fired(doesn't break down or get soft after sitting in a cup of water for a couple weeks) it will work.
