Soil discussion

There seems to be a lot of discussion and opinions about the kind of soil to use for bonsai. There is an article by Brent Walston on the subject which is the most scientific I have read yet. It is among a list of excellent articles on the Evergreen Gardenworks web site http://www.evergreengardenworks.com/soils.htm

I am sure that some may take exception to Mr. Walston's theories as there are many favorite recipes for soils. It's really worth a look though.

Re: Soil discussion

Brent's "theories" are not controversial, they're basic bonsai fact. *Ignore them at your peril. *Some may suggest different components than he does, but the physics of the soil in the pot are the same. *People just like using different materials to achieve the same ends.

FWIW, there are some other scientific soil articles written by Howard Smith in the "Bonsai Science" column in TBE Journal at www.bonsaienthusiast.com (both in the current column and in the archives - link found on the "Columns" page).

Re: Soil discussion

There is an excellant book on soil called "The nature and properties of soils" by Nyle Brady and Ray Weil. This is an introductory text book I used for my basic Soils class and it covers just about everything that has to do with soil as a natural body. It gets pretty technical in some aspects but applying the science to bonsai soil is easily done. The book isn't cheap but a local library or a land grant university library may have it.
