I've heard 50% fig bark and 50% lava rock is supposed to be ideal for ficus.

Eric that recipe works wonders. As far as it being to wet that is your judgment call. If the soil isn't tested before watering and is damp and you water it will always remain wet. Though you would be hard pressed to over water lava and bark mix.

For more info on soil mixes in general see here

thanks for the comments tom and the soil mix info, and still waiting for a tropical mix from your website

as for my mix, i will be using 50% pinebark 40% lava and 10% girt. my only problem now is where to get small grained lava that is not 1/2" chunks.

eric

G'day Eric...

"...50% pinebark 40% lava and 10% girt..." should work...however...

You can get the best info on local sources from a local bonsai club.

Find a club, and join it...you might like it.

In the mean time...I have found smaller lava rock at Home Depot...in smaller bags, in the indoor plant section. Also, pumice will work as well as lava.

Keep in touch with bonsaiTALK...we're here to help.

G'day Eric...

Check with the clubs...you might be able to carpool...

Back in Arizona, there were three of us that communted together, for several years, about 45 miles one way...

It worked for us...

as you can see, theres alot of different veriety and different preferences...

what everyone posted is all ok.....
but i think personally depends on what type of environment u live in.

if u live in a moist, damp...humid area.....lots of rain.....

a more gravelly or grit ratio should be used. (id say)

in a more hot dry climate and ur not always around to water it adequately, its better to use a more soil to retain more moisture.

ok Recipe for Ficus soil......according to Collin Lewis - Bonsai Survival Manual...

Organic - 60% Grit - 40%

As you can see everyone from different areas have customised thier soil.
but if you are a beginner, probably stick to what the book says until you get more experience in planting and then choose your own soils and fertilizers.
