Soil at bonsaioutlet.com
Hello Fellow Tree-Huggers,
I've been involved (hands on) in the art of bonsai for about 2 years. My first success is about a 7 year old Chinese Elm that I bought from Brussel's Bonsai company. It's time for me to repot and I've been looking for a cheap quality bonsai soil to buy over the net. Here is a site that I was impressed with and was wondering what your opinions are about it. Is it a good deal for price? Is the company trustworthy? Are there better deals out there? http://www.bonsaioutlet.com/proddet...prod=cdecidsoil I also own a young orange tree, and several cuttings from my Chinese Elm, and a Chinese Elm from my grandmothers yard. Thanks a bunch Justin Last edited by drjustin : 26-Sep-2007 at 03:53 PM. |

bonsai soil
That looks awfully expensive to me... there are several good recipes floating around on this site for making your own. I would think you could make a wash tub full for that price. My late bonsai teacher used to make and sell the soil and he charged $15.00 for a 5 gallon bucket sized portion....and made a profit at it. I don't believe you need a special formula for deciduous trees.... A good bonsai soil is just that. It is a well draining soil with very little (if any) organic material. If you check out this site you will find recipes that you can make yourself.

Thanks To All -
If I had the available sources (locally) I would make my own batch of bonsai soil; so I must resort to a pre-mixed soil cheap and excellent quality. I have a Wal-Mart, a Sutherlands, and two Farm & Home supply stores in my small town. I doubt they will carry the exact ingredients. Thank you for the links. I will check them out... Sounds like I need to do more research and ask more questions. What's your favorite recipes ?I appreciate the help ---thanks again. ~justin |

Justin the reason it's up in price is that it is a small pkg., and typically you pay more for "individual" sizes. N E Bonsai's soil is good as bonsai soil goes, I would get a bucket size if you can, you will be surprised at how fast you use it up, and it will be cheaper # for #. Also check Tachigi's site, he also sells a good mix.

Thanks Bill for the plug
![]() Justin, the mix I sell is more expensive at first glance. There is a reason for that. Its got more in it than turface, sand, and bark. Its comprised of Akadama, lava rock, grani grit, New Zealand white sphagnum, turface, and a variety of micro nutrients. All ratio'd from Colin Lewis's Recipes. You also get a 9 pound bag verses a 2 pound cited in your link. So your actually getting more for less. The mix is dynamite anyone that has used it has raved about it. There are three mixes Conifer, Deciduous, and a special mix for pines. Here is a pretty good article Colin wrote about soils. Good luck in the soil hunt

Justin,
If you haven't done a search on this site yet, you might start here: http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/f8/what...cipe-23229.html There are many other threads discussing soil mixes, using a wide variety of commonly found components. I'm not trying to dissuade you from buying premixed soil, but with a Walmart and farm supply stores nearby, you probably can find soil components that will work well for you. Brian
