Re: Shimpaku Juniper Soil

There are many posts here concerning soil mixes. Junipers in general require a free draining mix, as do most all bonsai. Free draining soils we help reduce root rot. All bonsai growers will expierance root rot at one time or another, and it is not fun. The only differance between junipers and say, maples is the ratio of organics to grit. In maples it may be as high as 50/50. In junipers it may be 70% grit and 30% organic, by way of compost or bark.

I would suggest depending on size of tree:ie 1/8" to 1/4" particle size on trees under 12" and 1/4" to 3/8" on larger trees.
For a juniper mix : 50% sifted lava stone
10% sifted turface, haydite, granite
10% coarse sand ( 1/16 and larger)
30% sifted redwoodbark (composted)
This should allow water to run right thru, while allowing the bark to take in some moisture for the rootlets to bathe in.

Hope this helps, AK

Re: Shimpaku Juniper Soil

Since you live in the Bay area I will leave it to Matt to give you some info as to where you might find these items. Sand and redwood compost or bark should be found at Home Depot. Home Depot does have red lava stone, but it is on the larger size, 3/8"particle. Matt may even sell pre made soil. If he does not, email me at chili84@msn.com. AK
