Rinse after fertilizer? Necessary or not?

I am about to fertilizer my ficus tree with 1/4 strength 20-20-20 fertilizer. I plan on doing this weekly. Is it really necessary to rinse thoroughly after fertilizing. Wouldn't this defeat the purpose?

Thank you to all who reply.

Do you mean watering again right after fertilizing with liquid solution? That would defeat the purpose and wash most of it away before the roots could take it up.

I am not an expert, but I think that giving your trees 20-20-20 at this time of year can give your trees fertilizer burn. Maybe I am wrong, but this is what I have read. Right now trees are pretty much in a somewhat dormant period, and need little fertilizer. I am using fish emoulsion at 5-1-1.

Tony, What I meant was, rinsing with water after fertilizing. I've read that this is necessary to keep from burning the roots. It seems like it would defeat the purpose to me too. Hopefully someone will shed some more light on this.
Doody, My plants don't seem to be dormant at all. They're all growing fast right now. I'm in Tennessee, maybe that's why. Thanks

W.O., you didn't answer Tony's question. The info is right in his response:

Is it liquid fertilizer dissolved in water? If so, you don't want to flush it out with more water

Sorry Tony, I misunderstood you. The fertilizer isn't liquid itself but it is mixed with water. It is Schultz's brand. It's a sandy type consistency but dissolves in the water. 1 Tablespoon per gallon of water is regular strength. I plan to use 1/4 strength. Should I rinse with water after giving the fertilizer. Thank you.

No, you can use the diluted fertilizer solution instead of watering. Drench the soil thoroughly. Do be sure that you water adequately in the weeks following any fertilizer application.

Regards,

Matt

W.O.

I live in middle Tennessee and have been fertilizing with miracle grow or miracid at 1/4 strength for the last month and everything is doing fine. I water the tree alittle before I apply the fertilizer, the soil seems to take the fertilizer water better with not as much runoff. I dont water right after the fertilizer is applied.

W.O.: You are correct, rensing after fertalizing will defeat the purpose. I will say again, when feding your bonsai less is better than more. You are wise to only use 1/4 strength and then cut it again with water. This is the theroy, in the ground the tree spreads its roots out in a very slow moving system. Nutrents dont move very quickly so the tree is able to take up what it needs when it needs it. In a bonsai pot things are moveing much faster. Water is flushing through the soil every day striping out the nutrents that your tree needs. Here is the problem, if you put a lot of fertalizer into your bonsai pot most of it will just get flushed out with succesive waterings. So I think that the answer is less fertalizer more often so that a little food is in the pot at all times. I hope that this helps you to understand fertalizing better.
