Repotting Part II

I had big plans on repotting about 27 trees today. That did not happen. I had to get my truck serviced and other things came up that took me away from my repotting. I did manage to get 9 done though.

Putting the tree back in the small pot will give a chance to work on ramifying the branches a little better. Trying to do this in a growing container is futile.

This is a trident maple back in its original pot. The tree is 8" tall and the pot measures 6" x 4" x 1.5".

This black pine had been sitting around for years. The tree had many roots spinning around the trunk at the soil line due to the small growing can it was in. I had it in a 5 gallon can for 3 years. It used to be in a slant style, and I stood it up 2 years ago.

The branches have started to fill out, and it is looking better than it did 5 years ago. It will always be an ugly tree, but I should be asle to sell it with a little grooming and having it potted.

Tree stands 20" tall and the pot measures 10" round by 3" deep. It is deep blue in color, almost black.

This white pot is the tray that the trident was in for the last few years. This forest of tridents will be very nice in leaf. They will need some good ramifying to be nice in winter. This will come now with time.

Trees stand 12" tall and the pot measures 11" x 8" x 1".

This is an experiment that I did last year to see what I could subject a juniper to. I bent the snot out of it, broke that plant in 5 places, and wired it to within an inch of its life.

The plant put on great foliage, the wood grew and the wire actually cut in, and the wood stayed where I bent it after I took all the wire off.

I planted up the tree, reshaped the foliage and re- wired the tree. It is definatly Chinese in character.

The plant is in a bonsaiTALK Jay Gettinger pot. The tree is 13" tall and the pot measures 7" round by 1.5" deep.

This juniper is the one I just styled two weeks ago at the Hanfor Bonsai Society meeting. I put the plant in a Michael Hagedorn pot, and cleaned some roots off the trunk. I will continue to work on the branches in the future, but it looks bright ahead.

I like the color of this pot and I think it works very well with the juniper foliage. I have to get Michael to make some rectangle pots with this glaze. The tree is 8" tall and the pot measures 5.5" round by 1.5" tall.

This plant is the shimpaku juniper that I styled in the GSBF convention this year. It is too early to be potting this plant, but since the pot is oversize and holds more than a gallon of soil, I figured it was larger than the gallon can it was in. I have done nothing to the plant since the initial style and will prune it back in the fall after everything that is going to die off does so.

I figure I may even lose a branch, so I am in no hurry to do anymore work on this plant. It should be OK in this pot for three years anyway.

Plant is 10" tall and 22" wide. Crater pot and workshop both by Jim Gremel.

Al, I like the way your tree looks in my pot....its nice to see my work being used. I'm a bit busy at the moment, my first grandchild was born early Sat AM. Will get a picture up in the next day or so......

Al.. love the series on repotting... it tells a story and educates at the same time...
