Repotting Citrus

When is the best time to work and repot citrus?
I have been doing it in the spring along with my other trees but have come to realize that citrus are tropicals and maybe should be done in the summer.

Is it too late this year for repotting? I'm in central florida.
Thanks,
Jay

I just repotted a poncirus (common root stock for most citrus) and also defoliated it. It's doing well and has pushed out many new buds and leaves. Removed better than 50% of the roots going from a 25 gallon to a 5 gallon. Removed all old soil. Can't really seem to kill it.

If in doubt hold off - I don't know if it's in a small pot or what. On the other hand we will have at least 3 more months of good weather here so why not.

If so inclined bring it to the Lakeland Club meeting next week and we'll take a look at it with you.

Hey Graydon,

I took half of your advice...decided against repotting but went ahead and defoliated a couple of weeks ago. This is some sort of seedling citrus that normaly has rather large leaves. Next early summer I plan to repot into a bonsai size pot and then work on leaf reduction.
I don't really expect the leaves to reduce enough to be a believeable bonsai, but with a couple of defoliations a year, the second set of leaves might get close.
This little one is only 9" tall from the soil surface.

Anyway, here's a pic of the tree with the new leaves coming out.

Jay

Graydon, is there any chance that we can see a pic of that poncirus, there is something right next to my house that has giant thorns,...I wonder if it may be the same thing.

Hey Jay - we missed you at the meeting - sure hope you can make it to one. We did a club workshop today at a nursery in Lakeland.

Nice citrus tree - and my choice of growing container as well! I think you have the making of a real sweet little tree. I had a discussion with another club member today about reducing overly large leaves. He had some great points on letting them go until a few weeks before showing the tree and then defoliating so you get a push of newer, smaller leaves. He also brought up that when you defoliate, especially for ramification, you should wind up with twice as many smaller leaves. That would give you same surface area to take in sun.

Perhaps George will chime in on this thread, he's the leaf guy. Most of my trees are leaf envious trees (needles).

Zen, I will try to take a shot tomorrow and post. Not really much to see right now as it was hacked back hard and defoliated. Basically a trunk and a few branches.

I have added a couple shots I found on some gardening web sites from a Google search. Just to be clear and not get popped for willheathism (or plagiarism) these are not my trees and not my photos. I am hoping no harm is done as I am just trying to illustrate what the tree looks like.
