Re: Repotting
You can almost always pot up to a larger container without disturbing the roots much.
Keep in mind though that the soil surrounding the root ball will drain much better, so you may have some difficulty watering and you'll need to be sure that you completely saturate the root ball. An alternative is to do a partial repot by cutting out blocks of soil/root from the four corners of the pot and then replacing with fresh soil. That should help with the drainage problem and maybe less disruptive to the tree in general. I think there is some info in the ***FAQ*** on emergency repotting. It may be in the item called "when to repot" Regards, Matt

Re: Repotting
Adam: Defoliate the trident and do a standard repot, Comb the roots out and even fix what you feel that you can. Give partial sun aftercare and your tree will bud out with a new set of leaves and produce a new set of roots. The chinese elm can also be repotted but instead of defoliating cut all leaders back to the first or second leaf, it will also bud out with a new set of leaders. Give the same partial sun aftercare. Also keep these trees moist but not soaking wet, do not feed until the tree has produced three to four new leaves on each leader. I would not do a radicle root pruning but would not hesitate to repot into a growing container with good aftercare. Good luck and let us know how this comes out.......ripsgreentree
