Question for dg users
Hello. Here's a quetion for you decomposed granite (dg) users. What is it about dg that's favorable for bonsai? Is it just that it's available to you locally or is it some sort of chemical composition/reaction with dg that helps?
A bit of explanation... I'm a professional geologist, so to me, dg is a very specific thing. I'm trying to figure out if dg is being used more generically, like most people use "granite" to describe any felsic intrusive igneous rock .Thank you for your help.

Re: Question for dg users
I don't think DG is favorable due to any chemical properties. I think that the hot bed of DG users started in southern Cal. The stuff was probably at most of the garden centers as driveway topping which was real popular in the 70's. It was the right size, cheap, readily available, and sharp. It has mainly fallen out of vogue due to breaking down in the pot and turning to sludge after 2 years. A lot of feed stores get poultry grit that has alot of DG in it. This is probably the main source now. AK
