Pumice,
Dry stall will work if it can be found at a local feed and farm supply (they use it for horses) or you can try one of the Bonsai supply vendors who sell hyuga, or if you want something close to pumice in all aspects (it is a littel heavier though) get some haydite, arkalite, or liteweight expanded shale. it can be found at a number of sites including the one run by the haydite people (I believe www.hadite.com, but don't hold me to that.

I sent a e-mail to drystall as to people who sell in Minnesota but of course no response. My local farm supply said "huh".I'll check horse supply in Minnesota. My local cement block producer has haydite and I have used it in the past but I understand that pumice is more retentitive,Anyway I will keep chugging along .Red domes contact site does not work so I sent them a e-mail direct.
Thanks!

Crust,
When it gets right down to it, Haydite and pumice are almost identical functionally. Keep us posted, John

Hey crusty,

You might be able to find a bonsai enthusiast out west ( where lava flows from the hillsides like wonderfull milk and honey) who is willing to share some. It may not be enough for your needs however, as lava is so expensive to ship.
Pumice is a little tougher to find.
Have a nice day

Red dome got back to me and says thety don't ship anymore and sun gro horticultural buys the stuff. They offered no help.sigh.
I did find one person in Minnesota that has some drystall. This is a small horse trainer and was willing to sell me three bags full.According to Drystall they are the only people with Drystall in MN.Wow.
Crazy,

Crust,
i must be getting old. I believe that Roger at meco Bonsai in Pennsylvania got a pallet or two of 1/4" lava. You might try him.

Another option is to plan a vacation out west for next summer... load up and go to Denver, i do have a secret source there, but they don't ship.

Crust, Tom at Shadyside had been hospitalized again, email again or give a bit more time. Also hate to use this one but home dumpo sells Colorado red lava as a soil amendment, might have it there, they sell turface too, at least here they do.

Yes, Tom has had it tough this spring but give it another go, he may also be offering pumice in the near future. I am going up to see him this weekend so I'll put a bug in his ear if you like.
