Pine candles

Hi there:

The pictures shows you one of my pines candles one week ago, maybe a mugho one, the last time I transplanted it was two years ago. The problem is that again and for many years its candles doesn’t grow like it would have to. It is six years in training and it happens every year.
Is it normal?

I hope you can help me

regards

Gabriel

Gabriel,

These would be considered normal on a Japanese Black Pine, probably also on mugo. These "rosettes" are typically produced when one cuts off all the new growth in early summer. If you have not been applying such technique maybe they are a cause for concern but as far as I know they are fine- just a variation on the growth that comes with training.

If the pine is healthy and budding well I'd not worry.

Is each one of those lil' white things a bud? Or are those pictures of buds opening?

I think California weather has my Black Pine all confused. It has buds in all stages of growth.

It's kind of a mini bud with the start of candles. I think tehy kind of look like "pineapples" before they open out

Gabriel,
Just a thought, but do you fertilize heavily through the growing season? Might be a lack of nutrients causing this.
