Perlite
Does anyone use perlite in their soil mix? I'm looking to hear the pros and cons on using this material in a soil mix.
Thanks |

Re: Perlite
Can't speak for its worth, but when I have used commercial soil mixes with it, it seems to float to the top of the pot afterwhile. Don't know that that hurts anything but it is rather unsightly.

Re: Perlite
My first thought was that it is too light, too. Most people around here tend to use pumice and/or fine lava instead.

Re: Perlite
I've used in the mix when I put trees in growing boxes, but never in a bonsai pot. The stuff does help with airation, but it is too white and it definitely floats to the surface.

Re: Perlite
Jth,
* I use it like Matsu for training and very large bonsai. I use it with vermiculite 50-50 for cuttings. * Long time Bonsai Master and bonsai nursery owner Phil Tacktill of Juisan-Bonsai Swears by it and uses it in his basic mix. Experiment with it, do some tests. *It is an easily found soil component. * * If you use it in your bonsai soil be sure and sift out the fines and wash it first. * Good question!

Re: Perlite
I used to use it in my soil mixtures, but I've switched to lava, which - as many previous posters mentioned - doesn't "float" as badly as perlite. Nor does it crumble and form undesirable dust as easily.
