Re: Osmocote
I think there are several kinds of Osmocote. Basically it is a water soluble fertilizer in a binder that disintegrates under the action of water and heat. So it gives a time-release effect.
Some people mix it with their potting soil. Be very careful not to use too much because you can't easily extract it from the soil.

Re: Osmocote
well, I'll give it a try, and what about those fertilizers that are named by 3 numbers, what do they mean?

Re: Osmocote
Regardless of the type of fertilizer, the composition of the product can be understood by its "NPK" ratio, which is the proportions of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K).
You can type in NPK at bonsaiTALK Links to get some additional leads. In layman's terms the NPK is sometimes considered the ratio of "UP" " OWN" and "AROUND" as Nitrogen promotes foliar growth, Phosphorus promotes Root growth and Potassium promotes bloom and fruit setting.Of course that is a gross generalization. So called "balanced fertilizers" have more uniform NPK distributions that other other concoctions that might be weighted more towards N (as lawn fertilizers often are) and P or K for bulbs or autumn fertilization. Regards, Matt

Re: Osmocote
Well, I get the idea, so, if my trees are developing nice leaves, but no branching structure, what can I do? do I feed them with a high nitrogen fertilizer? or what do you suggest me besides the patience?

Re: Osmocote
Its pretty simple. If you want the branches to run, put them in larger pots. The branch growth mirrors what the roots do, to a large extent.

Re: Osmocote
Ok, so I will wait a little, maybe I'm in a hurry, but if they don't develop branches in some monthes, I will move them to boxes (big boxes)
thanks for your time and patience Matt... you can be pleased to know you're the best (and only) teacher some of us have... so keep doing the nice work...

Re: Osmocote
Here in Brasil I often use Osmocote NPK 10-10-10 or 10-14-14, all over the year. Recently we develop here a super osmocote with a life spam of 1 year !!!, instead of our regular 3 months. Use it moderately according your needs, Do not use it in the first 15 days of transplanting (only if you prune the roots). I use it in winter too, because we live in the tropics [
)) ], do not forget. |
