olive bonsai soil mix

hi

i have got hold of four olive bonsai, an oval pot , a 5 " pot.
olive are around 2 yr old.

just a quick question, what soil shall i use for them ? mixture? where on net can i get cheap ?. or any ready made soil ??

also i am putting 1 olive in 5" rectangle pot to train and other 3 in oval as a group.

any ideas and suggestions on olive bonsai would be grateful

Hi Paul,

Olives don't like to stay very wet, so keep your organic soil components to a minimum. You could use 100% lava or turface, but including 10 - 20% organic is probably best. You could use composted pine bark or rice hulls for the organic component. Whatever you use, be sure to let the soil dry out a bit between waterings. For olives, better a little too dry than too wet.

this is my first attempt at bonsai so any help u could supply would be great

olives seem to be easy to work with !!!! i hope.

In the UK you'll prob have to keep them inside in the winter. Try to set up supplemental lighting to help them out. In the meantime, look at adding a chinese elm or juniper as your early bonsai choices. They should be pretty easy for you to grow outside all the time.
