yeah, it's platey. Not flat plates, more like pyramid-ish with flat sides and sharp edges. Definitely NOT round. The way I understand it, Akadama is crushed, reformed, and fired to make it hard. This stuff comes out of the ground as big rocks. It is then crushed to a grain size of roughly 1/4" and rinsed to remove the dust. That is the only processing that takes place. So, imagine crushing a big, VERY hard rock to little bits, and that's the way the particles are shaped.

Gary: Haydite is pretty platey, inorganic stuff.
It's fired shale, retains only a little moisture. It's made in the midwest so you should be able to find it. Per the pound it may be cheaper than the flourite stuff, I thiink pootsie |
