Mystery Fertilizer

One of my neighbors who knows that I have started growing and learning about bonsai gave me some packages of fertilizer the other day. Apparently about a year ago he bought one of those pathetic mall "bonsai" trees, the salesperson also gave him some fertlizer for the tree, probably a juniper. I took the fertilizer but I dont really know what this stuff is, the labeling is pretty vague about its origins, can you take a look and see if you recognize this fertilizer? See the attached photo. Thanks.

P.S. If it is safe to use this fertilizer I would only be using it on my junipers.

Re: Mystery Fertilizer

20-5-5 is a pretty common formulation for topdressing landscape plants and for some turf uses. It probably came in a 20lb sack and was cut into these little baggies by an enterprising person for bonsai use.

20-5-5 should be fine for your juniper, just don't overdo it with the application until you have some experience with it. The best option for chemical fertilizer is some type of controlled-release like osmocote. There are other slow-release brands but I don't recognize them by color.

Here is an link to some of the osmocote products and another site with a pdf document general overview on fertilizers.

Keep in mind that the information there is intended for trees in the ground. My wife mistakenly followed the general instructions to the letter once for a potted satsuki azalea, and it was fried to a crisp. It was something like a 1/4 cup for each foot of height.

Always be sure to apply plenty of water when you fertilize.
