Hi,
The most significant bonsai grower in Israel, the late Mr. Rafael Shami, used for bonsai soil pure Tuff (crushed lava stone). Rafael had a lot of agricultural knowledge and had one of the largest flower nurseries in Israel, he used to export all over the world (including Japan) and He had won a lot of medals for his flowers. He had more than 400 Bonsai and pre Bonsai trees, without discussing their artistic value there is no question that they where the healthiest trees I had ever seen. Rafael did not add any organic matter to his soil (Fred!) he used to say that the root ball had enough organic matter by itself. He used computerized irrigation with constant fertilizer; he did not screen his soil and used it as is (Fred!). For same years I do some experiments with tuff base soil. I had checked the dust of the Tuff with over watering and although it becomes muddy it never caked, still I do screen the Tuff before using it. The mixes I use contain at list 80% Tuff, and I believe that my trees are very healthy. I am Sorry for not posting for a long time due to very difficult times in our family.

Since my little article on soil was posted I have had many inquiries about where I get my fir bark. I have avoided answering that question. I am after all a businessman and my sources are important to me.
But seeing as how you people have been so nice I will share the information I do, after all, have three dogs ;o) Sorry couldn't help myself. |

Actually if anyone really wants to know . Almost any place that sells orchids will also sell fir bark. Most of the time pre-sifted.
I just could not pass up the chance to pull a joke |

A while back (see page 2 of this thread) I talked about this new soil mix I was using. Just thought I would update with a current picture of the trees. Looks like soil mix #1 works best. For me at least.
Bit of a difference in heights since December isn't it |
