Japanese White Pine
Hello everyone !
I want to repot 2 JWP's and i only have access to Omiyia Europe for on-line product ordering. Could someone suggest a good soil mixture for my pines having in mind that i can only find Akadama, Kanuma, Kiriyu, Bims, pumice stone, and Sphagnum moss / Peat moss ? And if so in what percentage ? I need to repot bad because my trees came as chinese imports and the roots are anxious to leave the pot! Thanks in advance Your friend Fanis

Fanis hi.
Given your climate, I would be tempted to re-pot in straight akadama, with a chopped sphagnum moss top-dressing. Possibly even some chopped sphagnum mixed into the soil too. This is mainly educated guesswork - it would be useful for you to find a grower locally. Regards, Fish.

Well my friend Fish...
I regret to say that local growers keep their knowledge to them selves in order to be able to sell a 2 year old shohin tree at the price of a 400 year old pinus!!!! That's why my only resource is the internet and you wonderfull brothers in bonsai art ! I will be buying some akadama some kiriyu and some sphagnum peat moss and just cross my fingers and see... A price just to make you understand: akadama 4 litre :local growers 20 Euros internet 15 including shippment !!!! Thanks Your friend Fanis

I live in Zone 9-10 like you.
Growing JWP is very difficult here. Mainly because of the heat and lack of cold winter, they are not as vigorous as in colder climates. Lack of vigour causes them to take water very slowly, so there is a tendency for root-rot. On the other hand, you don't want them to dry out in that heat. So, the advice from Fish is a good one, akadama should work. But make sure you use the hard - fired one (decomposes slower), medium size, and sift the dust out before planting. Top-dressing with green sphagnum is a good idea, but I wouldn' mix it inside the akadama. Also, they should be in larger then usual pot, which provides a more stable moisture. Proper watering and shade-cloth (filtered sunlight) is key to success. (I grow 3 JWP myself, and use 80% pumice, 20% bark and coarse peat-moss, but I imagine that akadama is just as good) Attila Last edited by Attila : 12-May-2005 at 05:57 PM. |
