How long do organic ferts keep?
How long does an opened bag of organic fertilizer stay good? The contents are dry and are not decomposing. Do they keep their nutritional value for over two years?

That would be the case if the bag was air tight, when you finished with the initial use I have found that airtight containers work best. Mind you I would not recommend, That you leave that long. I do have home made pellets that keep for up to 3 years. Pup

Big Ziploc bags will keep them a pretty long time, years even, if the contents stay out of sunlight and dry.

My question is mostly about an existing bag that I was just given. It's a bag of "Green King" and the top was just rolled down, so it wasn't airtight. It's about two years old. Is it worth using, or should I throw it away?

If there are no obvious signs of degredation or putrifaction, then everything that was there before will still be there now. It should be fine. Like biogold, it should keep for years unless it gets damp enough to start some significant bacterial action.
I buy the large bags of BioGold that see me for 2-3 years at a time. Stored in a cool, dark and dry place, it'll keep indefinitely without the need for hermetic seals and the like. If your Green King is in a plastic bag, it's probably best that it's not airtight. That's when you get stagnant air, condensation and localised moisture building up to start the rot. Think of it like storing seeds. A cool, dry place in a paper bag (rather than plastic) and they're fine for years. |

If it still stinks it's got to be good!
