grow boxes

I'm planning a Doug Philips-esk project with umbrella trees and will probably be planting it in a grow box, as I only have indoor space & I figure that will allow the most growth.

Would you all suggest bonsai soil or potting soil or some mixture?

Last night I found 12x12" plastic mesh baskets at Walmart for $1.53. I read about Vance's (much nicer) version of this & decided to try a couple of them as training pots. It's supposed to encourage fine root development by having mesh on all sides.

I don't have a camera, so . . . except that mine are a uniform mesh, the square one is pretty much it.

Bonsai soil! No question. Pond baskets should serve you well.
