Group Planting On Slate With Akada - How Do You Do That?

This year, after 25 years, I've finally started using Akadama when repotting. It's gone reasonably well so far.

Now, next spring I plan to create a group planting (Common Elms) and I'm thinking of using a piece of slate (which I haven't found yet, but I'll get a piece in England).

My question is - what's the procedure for planting with akadama on a stone slab/slate sheet?

Are there special precautions for preventing the Akadama from simply "rolling off"?

Jerry

I think what some people use is to get top soil and make a wall on the slate, and put the akadama in. that way, it wont roll off. I know my club uses top soil for rock plantings and stuff, so it should work the same.

Ive heard of using a mixture of sticky clay and fine peat to build the wall. Never done it though

It's called "muck" - usually a 50/50 mixture of clay and peat kneaded together really well. That gets built up in a wall around the perimeter and the soil goes inside. You can cover the muck with moss after planting, or it will probably develop there quite soon.

Regards,

Matt

I assume this is just a couple of cm high (2cm, 3/4"), right?

I guess the shape would be somewhat triangular in profile - like in this 'orrible little picture?

Yes, that's basically it, although the muck is really stiff and goes more straight up like a wall

than that broad wedge shape in your drawing, although you could shape it that way if you wanted. In reality it's between thetwo. I don't quite have the ASCII art capability to show something intermediate between the two

Here's some muck info for you:
