Do you have a local feed store? Ours (ok, granted, we are in the back-woods behind the end of the earth) tends to carry some odd things such as gravel and grit.

Pet shops that sell fish and aquarium stuff is the best bet if you're in a city. They sell all kinds of grit and gravel for aquariums and most of it is just the right size.

Grits are generaly for human consumption and made from corn. Grit is usually crushed granite used for birds that need a roughage in their diet to help digest their food.

On the other hand sharp sand is used in the building trade and is a rough sand product that is usually crushed rock.
I used it under the stone walk way I did in the back yard.
