"Fines" Question.

I got my sieves (3, 5 & 7mm - 1/8, 13/64 & 9/32") and tried them out on that expanded shale. The stuff that went thru the smallest mesh was pretty small but looked usable, especially for small pots. It was definately much larger than some sand that was in there. If I want to use the smallest size material, I'm going to need another screen to get the sand out.

Would just dust & sand be considered fines and anything larger be fair game?

Thanks for all the invaluble help, lm

I don't think I would use shale smaller than 1/16 which seems to be about what a window screen will retain. Something like lava or granite down to 1/32 may be acceptable but those won't break down as fast as the shale.

What's considered "fines" is relative to the mesh - anything that falls through is "fine", but maybe not so fine for your bonsai.

Regards,

Matt

One of the problems is that most 3 - sieve sets go no smaller than 1/8". 1/16" is really needed.

As Matt noted, window screening does just fine.
