Finding Soil in Toronto
I've been searching for days to find proper soil ingredience for my waterlogged bonsai's...
I cant find Haydite, Perlite, lava rock, turface, nor akadama, nothing... Even places that have bonsai in their name have no idea what I'm talking about, and most don't even pick up their phone... So frustrating |

There is a meeting of the Toronto Bonsai Society tonight. You should find the information you require from someone at that meeting... and make some new bonsai friends as well.
I've included the posted information from www.torontobonsai.org : MONDAY, Dec. 10, 2007 Toronto Botanical Garden, auditorium - Garden Hall Please bring in a tree for display on the side table. Please bring some special holiday munchings. 7:00 Library is open. 7:30 Meeting called to order. Information and business |

And one alternative if you can't get there (to the meeting.... though go if you can) that people often use if they live in what we amusingly call "bonsai hell"... is oildry. Available at most chainstore automotive places.
I have not used it myself, but I have friends who do, and they have had good results. Kindest regards, Victrinia |

Honey its Oil-Dri or Fuller's Earth or Diatomaceous earth (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diatomaceous_earth) .... you've always been lucky and had the good stuff!!!! Walmart usually caries it in the AutoMotive department. It's most commonly used for cleaning up oil spills (hence the name). ![]() |

What do you guys think of Diatomite? I found some at a local hydroponics lab...
Research on this forums seems mixed... edit: Maidenwell Diatomite to be more exact |

its basicly the same thing as Diatomacious Earth.
So.... if its all you can find.... give it a try... "Maidenwell" refers to the location in which it was mined in Australia. |

I suggest you join the Toronto Bonsai Society and ask locals what they use and are successful with in your area, as opposed to asking people on the web that don't live anywhere close to Toronto (looks like everyone that has answered is from the Pacific NW, which is hell-n-gone from Toronto).
But, since you asked, stay away from Oil Dry and its low temperature baked siblings. It will turn to mush very quickly in your harsh environment...

Cool,
I also found out I have access to perlite, and vermiculite; research tells me these are also commonly used for growing medium... |

Learn something new every day!!! @CRZY_Canuk... nope never got around to using it personally. I moved from the Midwest to the Pacific NorthWest before reaching a repotting season (I left the bag of Oil-Dri in Oklahoma for ~$3 I wasn't about to move the bag). Having access now to much better medium and more specificly the medium best suited to this climate all I could do was offer you first the information to find out from those who do know. And, second I can offer only what I know from the experience of others. Unfortunately I don't know anyone in Toronto. |
